The students at Morehouse are being generously rewarded, after stepping up to the plate and demanding more from the leadership of the university.
The storied learning institution has undergone several major changes, based on feedback from students and the Morehouse community.
After meeting with students and faculty members last week, members of the Board of Trustees decided to replace the current President John Wilson, and appoint the university’s COO Bill Taggart as Interim President.
The turnover had a positive effect on Morehouse, which received a $1 million pledge from The Ray Charles Foundation, which was being held up during the transition.
“We are extremely happy with today’s outcome, furthering our discussions of shared governance,” said Johnathan Hill, President of the Morehouse College Student Government Association.
“With this new chapter, the Board is keeping both institutional priorities and student centricity at the forefront,” Hill continued. “I appreciate the collaborative culture of this new leadership, and know that we will as stakeholders continue to hold one another accountable. It’s going to take a team effort to place Morehouse back in a position of strength, and what I witnessed has been just that.”
The financial boost will allow Morehouse, which has about 2100 students enrolled, to continue cranking out world-class leaders.
Since 1867, the university has produced notable figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and rapper Guru from Gangstarr.
The great news for Morehouse comes as the university prepares to start the celebrations for its 150th year anniversary.
