This Is How Kevin Liles Is Using Tech To Discover Rappers

When Kevin Liles started his career in the music industry back in the 1980s, there was no such thing as the internet.
Kevin, who worked his way up from Def Jam’s mailroom to be the president of the legendary record label, has embraced technology throughout his career.
Kevin Liles and Russell Simmons oversaw the launch of Def Jam Mobile in the early 2000s and was one of the earliest labels to embrace the internet, and use the medium to promote the new artists signed to the label.
Fast forward almost 20 years later, and Kevin Liles is still using the internet to find and cultivate new talent.
His latest company, 300 Entertainment, which counts artist like Migos, Fetty Wap, and Slim Thug as artists on the label, is embracing the power of social media with their #Freestyle50 competition.
#Freestyle50 is a two-year-old nationwide hip-hop search to find the top new rappers in the United States.
This year’s search was hosted by media personality Sway Calloway, and battle rap pioneer Smack White.
Chicago rapper Y.K Supe, 23, defeated eight of the nation’s top emcees at the #Freestyle50 cypher, to be crowned the winner of the #Freestyle50 challenge.
Y.K Supe will receive a record deal with 300, where his debut single will be produced by London On Da Track (Drake, 50 Cent), as well as $10,000, a record deal and an opening slot on the label’s upcoming Artist Development Tour.

“Y.K Supe clearly had a story to tell. He surprised the judges with his talent and creativity and we look forward to welcoming him to the 300 family.” – 300 Entertainment CEO Kevin Liles

Hit producer London on the track, who also served as a judge for the competitive tournament, said he was looking forward to working with Y.K Supe, after the rapper proved himself worthy of being signed to 300 Entertainment.
“The goal of #Freestyle50 was to discover that one artist with the potential to be the new voice for hip-hop and support them with all the tools they need to see it through,” said London On Da Track. “Y.K Supe proved he has the talent and drive. I am excited to hit the studios with him.”
