If President Obama Has His Way, You Can Go To College For Free

[P]resident Obama is working hard to ensure that education will be his legacy, after he leaves office in 2016. Earlier this week, The commander-in-chief unveiled a new proposal to make community college free for students across America, who meet certain requirements.
The offer of a free, two-year education is meant to motivate students around the country, so that U.S. citizens remain competitive in the global economy, from an educational and skills standpoint.
Receiving an education now is very important for those seeking gainful employment in the future. According to the numbers, 35% of all jobs will require at least a bachelor’s degree by 2020.

Check out what President Obama had to say about the future of education for all Americans.

If Obama’s proposal is approved, over 9 million students could potentially benefit from the changes. For instance, two years worth of free community college would save a full-time student over $3800 per year in tuition costs.
So, the plan would allow students to earn half of their bachelors degree, or acquire a technical skill from the local community college before transitioning to a local public four-year college or university.
“I think everybody understands that it [education] is the key to success for our kids in the 21st century,” President Barack Obama said. “But what we also understand is that it’s not just for kids. We also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages [and] better benefits.”
Free sounds good, but there are strings attached to the deal. First of all, students have to attend community college at least half time, as well as maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
So who is paying for this? You are of course. The federal government will cover three-quarters of the average cost of the community college. States that participate in the program will be expected to contribute the balance for students who are eligible for the program.
President Obama also unveiled the “American Technical Training Fund” aimed at expanding technical training across the country, in addition to developing stronger relationships with employers seeking qualified workers.
