Local media companies are already benefiting from the University of Southern California’s new school, the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.
In 2013, Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre forked over $70 million dollars to USC to create the new Academy. Students registered for courses are not only learning from their teachers.
The curriculum gives pupils a chance to network with the many guest lecturers who have come to speak on campus. Afterwards, the students have an opportunity to present their ideas and projects to the companies, in hopes of landing an internship or even a job in the future.
This is the exact scenario that led to a fruitful internship for Montana Reed, a sophomore at USC, taking classes through Jimmy and Dre’s Academy. Reps for a Culver City, a California-based company called Create Advertising spoke at the Academy, and afterwards Reed pitched them.
Although Reed was not sure of what to expect from his new internship, he was well-prepared thanks to his involvement with the Academy.
“The people we were working for were actually pretty blown away,” Reed told The Daily Trojan. “It really impressed them how three people who were freshmen were able to accomplish so many tasks as efficiently as we did. But we had been working together all year [at The Academy] so we already developed a very efficient work flow together and knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”
Because of their productivity, Crete Advertising was comfortable allowing the interns to produce a 360-degree video shoot. According to Reed, his experience with the Academy allowed him to have the confidence he needed to perform in a real-world setting.
Reed also had some words of wisdom for students who were looking to find interns. He said you should not be looking for an internship just to satisfy your school needs.
“Having connections or knowing people at the place you’re interning is pretty important so you can actually get involved and sink your teeth into some work,” Reed said.
In order to be successful, you’re going to need an internship that fits you and plays into your future goals.
