The SpotiFive: Five New Hip-Hop Songs This Week (May 12-19)

Check out the reviews of the latest singles you need to listen to .

Calvin Harris featuring Khalid and Future “Rollin”

The third single released from Calvin Harris’ upcoming album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1, “Rollin” features Khalid dreamy vocals and Future’s melodic rhymes. The song is about a relationship that has ended because it is not working out for their current and future plans. While Khalid’s chorus focuses more on the heartbreak and “anger in his chest” he feels because the girl wasn’t “the vibe.” Future’s verse focuses more on his flashy and luxurious lifestyle and what she’s missing out on.

Fetty Wap “Aye”

After Fetty’s 2015 self-titled album, he had done a bunch of features but not really followed up with any music of his own until now. “Aye” is more of a freestyle instead of a hook, but we hear a different side of Fetty. We are used to hearing him do more of the “singing rap” style than straight spitting bars. He goes hard on the verses and reminds us of his accomplishments. Fetty takes a couple of bars to go against former Remy Boyz member, P-Dice, who attempted to sue Fetty for $7 million.

Sage The Gemini “Pilot”

Sage is talking to a woman with an “LA face and an Oakland booty” in a nod to Sir Mix-a-Lot’s hit, “Baby Got Back.” Sage thinks the woman wants him, but she is playing hard to get. He tells her if she’s the captain, he’ll be the pilot which I’m assuming is a sexual metaphor. The heavy bass song that is sure to be a club banger was produced by P-Lo.

DVBBS featuring Belly “You Found Me”

DVBBS is an electronic duo from Canada that linked up with Roc Nation artist/Canadian native, Belly for a love stricken collaboration. The chorus focuses more on how they were “cold” and turned off to love until they met a certain someone. Belly talks about working hard, his cars, his money, etc and then he finally meets his girl. This could be the “mainstream” song Belly needs that will get him radio spins.

Buddy “Find Me”

Pharrell’s artist Buddy, searches for himself and reflects on his life in this memorizing song. The Compton native teamed up with Canadian producer, KAYTRANDA, to drop the EP “Ocean & Montana” and this is the lead single. In the first verse Buddy talks about getting attention from females but preferring to be alone and “getting high as hell,” In the second verse, he reflects on his life and how he’s moved away from Compton and doesn’t come home often, so his family thinks he has changed. Regardless of these thoughts going through his mind, he’s “lost and alone” and wants to be loved.
